Kooki Eliminated From Masaza Cup After A Draw With Bugerere

Kooki has been eliminated from  the 2020 Airtel Masaza Cup group stages after they were held to a 1-1 draw against Bugerere in their final Masengere group game on Monday afternoon.

Geofrey Ganganga put Bugerere in the lead in the 56th  minute after heading off a well driven Walugembe Derrick’s corner  but second half substitute Jacobs Othieno drew Kooki level in the 76th minute after a well neated David Okecho’s freekick found him un marked in the box.

Kooki  had a chance to take the lead after Assimwe Clinton was fouled in the forbidden area by Jafari Kaziro. Anthony Ssekidde Masikirano  missed the penalty  in which  Bugerere’s goalkeeper Otim Arafat well beaten.

The 2006 Masaza Cup winners were without two players, experienced defender Gordon Wante who carried an injury and goalkeeper Eria Ssentongo who was ruled out due to malaria.

But it is Bugerere who showed intent early on, with pacey winger Derrick walugembe, Umar Luswabi and Tonny Kiberu testing Kooki goalkeeper Isaac Kwizera Onyango who was equal to the task.

Kooki’s best chance in the first half came in the 38th minute, after Anthony Ssekidde picked up Geofrey Okello inside the penalty area, but the latter failed to beat the keeper from close range.

Ganganga scored the game’s first goal in the 57th, planting his header into the bottom right corner from Walugembe’s corner kick.

However, Othieno who was introduced in the 73rd minute of the game pulled Kooki level as he headed David Oketcho’s free kick beyond the outstretched glove of Arafat Otim at the far post.

The stalemate means Mawokota is the only team confirmed to progress to the knockout stages from the Masengere group with the team to be confirmed after the match between Mawokota and Kyadondo.

Due to  today’s draw, Kooki has been eliminated from this year’s Masaza Cup having garnered just a point from their three games while Bugerere now move on four points and are on the verge of qualification to the knockout round.

Mawokota has collected six  points from their opening two games while Kyadondo currently sit third with three points.

Bugerere won Kyadondo in their first match 2-0, but lost their second match 2-0 against Mawokota.
