Corruption refers to a form of dishonesty or a criminal activity undertaken by an individual or a certain organisation entrusted with a position of authority, often to acquire illicit benefits. There are so many forms of corruption, among them are embezzlement and bribery though the two may be legal is some of the countries.
Citizens should know that not all the governments are looking out for the best interests of their people and that’s why most countries have been caught up in corruption and political scandals. Most African leaders have even ruined their country’s economy hence ending up having a history of corruption that has caused political unrest against the citizens of the country.
It’s quite obvious that we don’t have a surefire way to measure corruption within a nation, but data can be taken and used to rank countries that are seen as the most corrupt in the continent and worldwide. The Corruption Perception Index (CPI) has always been used by Transparency International since the year 1995. It is used to measure corruption hence ranking is done annually.
The index is used in ranking countries by their perceived levels of public sector corruption. This is mainly determined through opinion surveys and expert assessments. The Corruption Percepton Index defines corruption as the misuse of public power for one’s personal gain. It ranks the countries on a scale of 100 (least corrupt) to 0 (most corrupt). Below is the full list of the most corrupt countries in Africa 2021.
