Wanyange girls school has at least suspended 17 students and 2 staff members over sneaking mobile phones into dormitories.
The headteacher Ms. Deborah Basekanakyo confirmed the groups suspension on Saturday.
A close source narrated that the school’s disciplinary committee reported that the affected students were found with mobile phones they had kept with some teachers and returned after use.
Another source indicated that four students from Wanyange girls who were given indefinite suspension have been asked to only return to sit for their final national examination but with stringent conditions well as others have been asked not to return to school after 3 weeks.
However each of the troubled students have been ordered to clear for any outstanding fees balances despite suspensions.
The Jinja city education officer, Ms Amina Mutesi described the decision as to both students and other parents paying school fees.
However attempts to have the head teacher rescind her decision had fallen onto deaf ears and in the process she decided putting the communication in written.
Nearly all learning institutions in Uganda prohibit mobile phone usage by students in school premises.
